Goshiki-numa (literally 5 color ponds)(五色沼)

There is a tourist attraction called Goshiki-numa in Urabandai which is the north foot of Mount Bandai in Fukushima prefecture.

Goshiki-numa doesn’t actually mean five ponds, but 5 color ponds. They say it is called “Goshiki-numa” because the series of ponds have various colors. Goshiki-numa is a generic term applying to 20-30 different ponds in the Urabandai region.

Ao-numa

Those ponds were formed when Mt. Bandai erupted and its debris and avalanches blocked the rivers in 1888.

Ruri-numa

There is a walking trail called “Goshiki-numa shizen tanshoro “. It takes about 70 minutes one way. You can see various colored ponds including Bishamon-numa, Aka-numa, Midoro-numa, Benten-numa, Ruri-numa and Ao-numa along the way (all of which are “Goshiki-numa”).

Benten-numa

It is said that the color of the water you see depends on volcanic materials in the water and moss on the bottom of the ponds, and it changes depending on time of day, the way the sunlight hits the water, the weather, the season, the angle of view and other factors.

Midoro-numa

I visited there at the beginning of November. The landscape of the ponds and the autumn leaves are breathtakingly beautiful.

Bisyamon-numa

The Morohashi museum of modern art is also a great sightseeing spot which I wouldn’t want you to miss. It is located just about a 15-minute walk from the exit near “Bishamon-numa”.

It has a large collection of Dali’s work and it is where Dali’s works are on permanent exhibit. The museum site and building was also amazingly beautiful.
