The buds of flowering Plum Trees (Ume in Japanese) begin to form before other trees in late January. Signaling the arrival of Spring, Ume blossoms are beloved by the Japanese.
Nowadays, when we think of flowering trees we often imagine the beautiful Sakura (Cherry) blossoms. However, traditionally Ume blossoms were more admired and viewing has been popular since the Nara Period (710-784 AD).
In fact, the Manyoshu (the oldest Japanese book of poetry) contains 120 Ume poems compared to only 40 poems dedicated to the Sakura blossoms.
There are many popular places all over Japan to enjoy Ume blossoms. One of the most famous is the Ikegami plum garden in the Ota Ward in Tokyo.
This beautiful garden contains over two acres and 370 Ume trees (including 150 white and 220 red Ume).
The garden has several benches which invite the visitor to take their time and enjoy the gorgeous flowers. It is well worth the trip.
The Ume trees were about 30% in bloom when I visited on Feb 9, 2021.
They were about 70% in bloom when I visited again on Feb 19, 2021.

There are also two Japanese tea rooms and a Japanese-style room.
Around 30 different varieties of Ume trees are grown in the garden, each with varying blooming periods. This means you can enjoy Ume blossom viewing from early January until early March.
Entrance Fee:
Adults (16-64 years old) – 100 yen.
Children (6-15 years old)- 20 yen.
Others – Free.

１月も終わりに近づくと、百花にさきがけて梅の蕾が膨らみはじめます。
梅の花は、春の訪れを告げる花として古くから日本人に愛されてきました。
現代では、お花見と言えば桜の花を思い浮かべますが、もともとは奈良時代に梅の花を愛でたことが始まりのようです。
実際、わが国最古の歌集『万葉集』には、桜の花を歌った歌が40首に対して、梅の花を歌った歌が120首載っています。
梅の名所は日本各地にたくさんあります。
東京大田区にある池上梅園もそのひとつです。
敷地面積は9880㎡。白梅150本、紅梅220本、計370本の梅が植えられています。
ところどころにベンチがあり、腰を下ろしてゆっくり眺めることもできます。
わざわざ出かけて行っても価値のあるだけの見事な景色を見ることができます。
今年2021年2月9日は3分咲きでした。
2月19日は7分咲きでした。
枝垂れ梅は本当に素晴らしかったです。
園内には、梅の木の他に茶室が2つと和室が1つあります。
30種類の梅の木があり、それぞれ開花時期が違うので、毎年1月上旬から3月上旬の2か月にわたりそれぞれの梅の花が楽しめます。
入場料は大人（16歳以上65歳未満）100円。
小人（6歳以上16歳未満）20円。
それ以外の方は無料。
