Tokyo Skytree with cherry blossoms

Stunning view

Tokyo Skytree, the world’s tallest freestanding radio tower at 634 meters, has become completely famous as a new landmark in Tokyo. Looking out over the whole of the Kanto region from the observatory is one of the pleasures, but it is also fun to gaze at the towering Skytree. In particular, Tokyo Skytree seen with cherry blossoms is a stunning view that can only be seen in spring.

Sumida Park, located near Tokyo Skytree, stretches about 1 km along both banks of the Sumida River, from the Azuma Bridge to the Sakura Bridge. This park has been famous for its cherry blossoms since the Edo era, and its beautiful cherry tree banks are called “Bokutei no Sakura.” (“Cherry Blossoms of Bokutei”) A total of about 1,000 cherry trees, including Someiyoshino, Oshima-zakura, and Sato-zakura, are in bloom, about 600 trees on the Taito Ward side and about 350 trees on the Sumida Ward side in Spring. It is now selected as one of the 100 best cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan.

Why not walk along the Sumida River in the park while viewing the cherry blossoms on the Taito Ward side, then cross the Sakura Bridge and walk to the Sumida Ward side?

The Sakura Bridge, which connects the Taito Ward and Sumida Ward sides of Sumida Park, is the only pedestrian bridge over the Sumida River. In early April, when the weather is still cold, it is pleasant to be wrapped in the warm spring sunlight while feeling the cold wind from the Sumida River. I was somewhat proud to see Tokyo Skytree looking up in front of me.

The view of the Sumida River, cherry blossoms, and Tokyo Skytree from the bridge is different from that from the shore.

Cross over to the Sumida Ward side and walk along Sumitsutsumi toward the north for a while, and halfway down the bank and across the road, you will find two famous long-established Japanese confectionery shops. One is famous for Chomeiji Sakura Mochi, located behind Chomeiji Temple, and the other for Kototoi Dango, located north of Chomeiji Temple. Both are long-established shops that have been running since the Edo era.

On this day, I stopped by the Kototoi Dango Shop. When I was tired from walking, I enjoyed a cup of green tea and dumplings with just moderate sweetness, and was blissfully happy.

Why not include a Hanami walk while looking for a spot with a stunning view of the Sumida River, cherry blossoms, and Tokyo Skytree in your candidate sites for Hanami next spring?

Ikuyo.K.
