I saw a Maneki-neko on a shelf of a Takoyaki (octopus dumpling) shop near my house the other day.
Maneki-neko is an auspicious pottery figurine which is often believed to bring prosperous business.
The cat may look like it is waving goodbye, but it is not, actually it is beckoning.
There are two kinds of Maneki-neko- One type is raising its left paw, and the other its right. The former will bring customers, and the latter will bring money and good fortune.
Typically it has a bell on its collar and holds a koban, a gold coin that was used in the Edo period.
先日家の近くのたこ焼き屋さんの棚に招き猫が飾ってあるのを見つけました。
招き猫は商売繁盛をもたらすと信じられている縁起の良い置物です。
招き猫は、手を振っているように見えるかもしれませんが、そうではなくて、招いているんです。
二種類の招き猫がいます。
左手を挙げているのはお客さんを招いています。
右手を挙げているのは金運を招いています。
典型的なのは、飾りに鈴と小判（江戸時代に使われた金貨）をつけています。
