Nagoshi-no-oharae is performed at almost all shrines on June 30th. Oharae is a special ritual for purification.
Shinto priests(shinshoku) purify the directions of heaven, earth and north, south, east and west in the ceremony.
Shinto priests and their assistants (miko) purify sins and vice which we had in the first half of the year by passing through a big ring of miscanthus grass called Chinowa.
The Chinowa is placed in front of the worship building (haiden) during the entire month of June for visitors.
We visitors also pass through the Chinowa and pray. While passing through the Chinowa, we walk like we draw the figure of eight.
Human shaped paper for purifying is given by our local shrine.
We write our names on the paper, breathe on it or rub our body with it. Then we give it back to the shrine.
This is an event (a ritual) to remove sins and vice we had over the past six months. By doing this, we can live in peace in the latter half of the year.
We Japanese have valued living in peace by purifying sins and vice since early times.
Note: Some Japanese who believe in Shinto, not all Japanese, pray at shrines.
6月30日には神社では夏越（なごし）の大祓（おおはらえ）が行われます。大祓とはお祓い（清め）の特別な儀式です。
式典では神職が天地四方をお祓い清め、神職、巫女が「茅の輪くぐり」をし上半期の罪穢れをお祓いします。茅の輪は、参拝者のために、6月の間ずっと拝殿前に置かれています。
我々参拝者も茅の輪をくぐり参拝します。
茅の輪をくぐる時には、8の字を描くようにします。
また、氏神神社から紙で作られた人型をした大祓の形代が配られます。その形代に名前を書いて、息をふきかけ、または体にふれ、神社におさめます。
これが私達が過去半年間にもった罪穢れを取り除く儀式です。こうすることにより、私達はその後の半年間を幸せに過ごすことができます。
我々日本人は古くより諸々の罪・過ちを祓い清め、常に清らかな気持ちで過ごすことを大切にしてきました。
注）すべての日本人ではなく、神道を信仰している日本人が神社で参拝します。
