Suga shrine has been worshipped by the residents in eighteen towns of Yotsuya (in Tokyo) from the early Edo period because it enshrined the guardian God of the town. Susanoo no mikoto and Ukanomitama no mikoto are enshrined as a shusaijin (main enshrined deities) there.
One day in April of 2019 I went for a historical walk with an old map of a guidebook along the koshu-kido Road from Yotsuya station. On the way I turned on a road and went down a hill, and then I saw some stairs at the bottom of the hill. There was a stone monument, on which the name of Suga shrine is engraved, beside the stairs. My guidebook says that these stairs weren’t there in the Edo period, so you should turn right and go on the old road to the shrine. That is the correct way as a historical walk. So I turned right and walked on the old road to the shrine without going up the stairs.
Within the Suga shrine grounds a lot of green trees and remaining cherry blossoms were so beautiful that I felt refreshed. However, I didn’t know why but I felt somewhat strange.
I saw many young foreign visitors and young women visiting alone. There was a unique atmosphere that I had never felt at other shrines. Of course they prayed at the shrine, but at the same time they took many pictures at the bottom, at the middle, and at the top of the stairs instead of the shrine and the Torii gate. Those scenes seemed strange to me.
I realized later that the stairs which I deliberately didn’t go up was one of the real-life locations of the animation movie “Your Name”. Japanese animation is so popular in the world that a lot of fans visited there to see the real-life location (Animation pilgrimage) not only from all over Japan but also foreign countries.
I didn’t take any pictures of the stairs by myself, so I posted two pictures of them which I found online for reference.
須賀神社は江戸初期より四谷の地に鎮座する、四谷十八ヵ町の鎮守様です。須佐之男命（すさのおのみこと）と宇迦能御魂神（うかのみたまのみこと）が主祭神として祀られています。
2019年の4月のある日、四ツ谷駅から古地図付きのガイドブックを片手に甲州街道の歴史散歩を楽しみました。途中道を折れ、坂を谷底まで下っていくと正面に階段がありました。階段脇には須賀神社と彫られた石が立っています。ガイドブックによると「江戸時代にはこの階段はなかったので敢えて上らず、ここで右折して昔からある道をたどって神社へ行くのが歴史的散歩としては正しい」というので、階段を上らず、昔からある道をたどって鳥居の前へ出ました。
木々の緑が豊かで桜の花がまだ残る境内はとても綺麗で心地よく、清々しい気持ちになりました。ところが何か様子が違います。
多くの外国の若者の姿、一人で訪れている若い女性の姿が目立ちました。他の神社で感じたことのない独特な雰囲気です。もちろん皆さん参拝もしていましたが、盛んに写真を撮っていました。それも神社や鳥居というよりも先程の階段の上から下から途中から。その光景は私には異様に見えました。
後で分かりましたが、私が敢えて上がらなかった階段は、アニメ映画『君の名は』の聖地になっている階段でした。さすが日本のアニメは大人気、日本のファンはもとより外国のアニメファンが聖地巡礼にたくさん訪れていたということでした。
というわけで自分では階段の写真を撮らなかったので、ネットで見つけた階段の写真を参考までに載せました。
