I would like to explain ”Setsubun”.
Setsubun is the day before the beginning of spring in the old Japanese calendar, and it is on Feb 2nd this year (2021).
On that day, we throw beans while shouting “Oni-wa-soto, Fuku-wa-uchi” which means “Devils out!, Happiness in!”. This is called “Mame-maki” (literally: Beans-throwing).
After throwing the beans we eat the number of beans that corresponds with the age you will be in that year while praying for happy and healthy life.
It is said that eating a thick sushi roll called Ehomaki on Setsubun is auspicious.
When we eat it, we must face the year’s lucky direction in silence.
Seven kinds of ingredients are usually used to prepare Ehomaki. The number “7” comes from the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin) of Japan. So, rolling the seven ingredients into the sushi means rolling the seven gods into it.
節分を説明したいと思います。
節分は立春の前日で、今年は２月２日になります。
その日には、私たちは「鬼は外」「福は内」といいながら豆を投げます。
これは豆まきと呼ばれます。
まき終えたら、年の数（満年齢）より１つ多く豆を食べて、幸福で健康な生活を祈ります。
節分に恵方巻と呼ばれる太巻きを食べるのが縁起がいいと言われています。
それを食べる時は、無言でその年の吉方を向かなければなりません。
太巻きには一般的に7種類の具材が使われます。
７柱の福の神様（七福神）に由来していて、幸福を巻き込むという意味になります。
