Present Shinjuku-dori Ave from Yotsuya station for Shinjuku is equivalent to Koshu-kaido Road.
A gate, Okido, was built as a gateway to Edo (currently Tokyo) on Koshu-kaido Road to protect Edo in 1616.
The road under the gate was laid with stone paving and stone walls were built on both sides of the gate.
The door of the gate was closed at night.
The gate was removed in 1792.
After Meiji Restoration, the stone paving and the stone walls were removed in 1876 because they were obstacles to traffic.
And there is nothing left there now.
That place is equivalent to present Yotsuya Yon (4) -chome intersection. There is a monument of the Yotsuya Okido by the Yotsuya community center and it is designated as a historic site of Tokyo.
The Okido Gate, one of the gates of Shinjuku Gyoen National Park was named after Yotsuya Okido.
現在の四谷駅から新宿方面に向かう新宿通りは甲州街道に当たります。
1616年に、江戸防備のため、甲州街道に江戸への出入り口として大木戸が設けられました。
地面には石畳が敷かれ、木戸の両側には石垣が積まれました。
夜になると扉が閉められました。
1792年に木戸は撤去されました。
明治維新後、石畳や石垣は交通の障害となったため、1876年にどちらも撤去されました。
現在は何も残っていません。
そこは現在の四谷4丁目交差点に当たります。現在、四谷区民センター脇に四谷大木戸跡の碑があり、東京都指定旧跡となっています。
新宿御苑の出入り口の一つである大木戸門の名前は、四谷大木戸に因んでいます。
