If you visit Omiwa Shrine about early June, you could see bamboo lilies called sasayuri (Lilium japonicum) displaying light pink flowers. They are planted in Sasayuri garden, Omiwa-no-mori (Omiwa grove) or near Kuehiko Shrine inside the grounds of Omiwa Shrine. They have been cherished as flowers of offerings to the Kami (deities) in Omiwa Shrine.
According to Kojiki, one of the oldest surviving historical chronicle in Japan (compiled in the year 712), sasayuri grew in abundance and beautifully around Sai-river at the foot of Mt. Miwa. This is where Himetataraisuzuhime-no-Mikoto, a daughter of Omononushi-no-Okami (the kami who resides in sacred Mt. Miwa) lived and the first emperor in Japan, Jinmu Tenno fell in love with her, and married her. So she became the Empress.
The Himetataraisuzuhime-no-Mikoto is enshrined in Isagawa Shrine, which is the oldest shrine in Nara city. Saikusa-matsuri (Saikusa-Festival), which is also called Yuri-matsuri takes place on June 17th every year. Saikusa is an old name of sasayuri.
During the festival sake casks decorated with many sasayuri from Mount Miwa are presented as offerings to the kami, and the miko (female shrine attendants) perform an offertory dance with branches of sasayuri in their hands to please the kami.

６月はじめ頃に大神（おおみわ）神社をお参りすると、淡いピンク色の花を咲かせた「ささゆり」の姿を見ることができます。
境内（けいだい）にある「ささゆり園」や「大美和の杜（もり）」や「久延彦（くえひこ）神社の周辺」に咲いています。ささゆりの花は、大神神社では、神様に捧げる花として、大切にされているお花です。
日本に現存する最古の歴史書『古事記』には、次のような話が書かれています。
「三輪山の麓（ふもと）の狭井（さい）川のほとりは、たくさんのささゆりが咲き誇る美しいところでした。そこに、三輪山の神様である大物主大神（おおものぬしのおおかみ）様の御子神（みこがみ）の媛蹈鞴五十鈴姫命（ひめたたらいすずひめのみこと）が住んでいました。やがて、五十鈴姫命は神武（じんむ）天皇（日本の初代天皇）に見初められて皇后様になられました。」
その五十鈴姫命（いすずひめのみこと）が、奈良市最古の神社である率川（いさがわ）神社にお祀りされています。毎年６月１７日には率川神社で三枝祭（さいくさのまつり）、別名ゆりまつりが行われます。「さいくさ」はささゆりの古い呼び名です。
そのおまつりでは、姫神様にお慶びいただくために、酒壺や酒樽を三輪山のささゆりで飾り、巫女（みこ）はささゆりを手に優雅に神楽（かぐら）を舞います。
